You know The Man? Cool!

Pardon my ignorance, but what is "SR"? I figure HP = Hewlett Packard.

I believe Sigfried made at least one full range dynamic dipole for Audio Artistry, the "Vivaldi", that wasn't biamped. Did it still have an equalizer?

I think it might be possible to do a passively biamped dynamic dipole system with the Maggies. You will need a beefy bass amp and a passive stereo volume attenuator (probably between preamp and Maggie amp).

Okay, the Maggie 1.6 (for example) does 86 dB with a 2.83 volt input. Since they are a 4 ohm load, that corresponds to 2 watts.

Now suppose you have a sub with two 90 dB 12" 8 ohm woofers paralleled. This would give you 96 dB with 2.83 volts (2 watts), or about 10 dB more than the Maggies.

Now suppose you have a 1 meter square baffle. This should be -3 dB at about 100 Hz and roll off at 6 dB per octave below. So a flat woofer on this baffle be about 15 dB down at 25 Hz. Ours won't be, though, unless our woofers have a Qts of about .7 - 1.0. I don't know of any 90 dB 12" woofs that do offhand.

Anyway, with a well designed passive low pass filter and judicious use of our passive volume control we ought to be able to augment and extend the bass of the Maggie 1.6's down to around 25 or 30 Hz.

I would think you could do this for a little over a grand, assuming a good deal on a beefy used amp.
