30 years ago I thought all cables should sound the same. My ears are not very good, roll off at about 12.5 k so I suspect that young muggers will notice even more of a difference.
I thought the idea of raising cables off the floor was pretty dubious until I buried and then excavated by croossover caps and inductors in sand.
I think a lot of us, myself included fall into the perspective of thinking of circuits and current flow in a DC frame of mind. What's actually going on is a very complex AC signal which is own electric and magnetic fields radiating cylindricaly from the conductor. Objects close to the conductor will affect this field and the propagation of the signal down the wire.
It is extremely difficult to measure any difference with these kinds of changes, but with our non linear ears and a dynamic range of more than 90 db most people are capable of hearing them provided they have an open mind.
